Portland, Oregon... (at least for a while longer, as I am prepping for the long-term life on the road)

    After that, who knows... ;)

I'm in Bee Cave, TX. About twenty minutes west of Austin. I share the same dream of the road, but am also determined to prove that there are alternatives to the unsustainable system we are living in. Perhaps then I'll take the idea with me on the road :)

How long is long-term? What are your goals and motivation for this? I'm very curious.

        >>> Perhaps then I'll take the idea with me on the road :) <<<

Now you're pondering what I'm pondering, Pinky! ;)

        >>> How long is long-term? <<<

As in, likely for the rest of my life... (I'm one of the hardcore nomads - don't like living disconnected from the elements "indoors" that kind of thing)

        >>> What are your goals and motivation for this? I'm very curious. <<<

Umm... Wow... there's alot to answer to that... Okay, I'll try taking a stab at this:

Goals: To be completely 100% self-sufficient, with plenty to spare. Self-generation of power/Hydrogen-Oxygen systems (also used in drive systems, charging of batteries, etc.)

Um, not your "standard domestic use" amount of power generated either... Large scale - basically as a central "hub unit" with central satellite, laser, and Wi-Fi communications, basic facilities, communal resources, etc.

Basically shooting for being able to both go to work and school on the road, and to basically live life "just like everyone else", only the backdrop's always changing... ;)

A network of communities - both mobile and sedentary engaged in mutually beneficial trade (for instance, nomads can't grow food easily, but small communities can't get immediate access to secure transport from the most cost efficient source of a particular good, hence, nomads trade grown food for "deliveries" of other good aquired throughout various other markets)

Um, damn, that whole list could go one for quite awhile... Basically, it would be the center of a very large mobile group capable of both business, manufacturing, and a few other highly specialized skills (like intelligence gathering for community nets)

As for my motivations, wow, that's an even deeper one. Basically, I'm spiritually motivated to do so. I see "returning to our roots" (but without leaving technology behind) as a fundamental step in humanity's evolution.

I'm basically doing it to prove that a perfect synthesis between modern and ancient styles of living is not only a good idea, but that it's infinately practical on many levels.

Yeah, any more about it, and I might as well just start writing a book... ;) LOL!

That sums up a lot of my ambitions as well :) Perhaps we could start a caravan, have our own logos and gang signs, the whole sha-bang :)

LOL! (I think you would be pleasantly suprised to discover that the "whole she-bang" is even far more... um... "colorfully complex" than I can describe in words, my friend... ;)

Ever try planning a moble research and development lab & HQs before...? Well, I hadn't either until about 20 years ago... ;) LOL!

The good news is, we're *just about there* as far as positioning goes (figure within the next year, easy) to get this whole operation/net funded and off the ground... Once we go moble, it's *all downhill* from there...

Except when we decide to head into the mountains, of course... ;)

It really sounds fantastic, man. Kinda jealous ;)

Seriously, though, if there's anything I can do to help your dream become possible, let me know, and I'll do as much as my resources allow. Honestly, I don't have much material resources, but if you ever need a hot meal when you cruise through Austin, gimme a holla. I'm sure Beaudha would say the same.

What kind of vehicle will be using?

Sorry about the mucho delay... :S This stuff doesn't exactly put itself together! ;)

And thank you so much for the offer of help and a meal when on the road...! It means *very much* to me to hear *someone* in the modern "western world" adhere to that most ancient and honored of traditions... ;)

As for the vehicle, it honestly depends on a couple of different factors, making it a little hard to guage right now. Could be a "beater" old car, a hybrid, and RV, or something altogether new, depending on the amount of funding I can acquire... ;) (Right now the beater has a blown motor) LOL!

About the offer of assistance with "the dream", I'll send you an invite and dialog a little more with ya' one on one as I get the chance.

It may just be that you already are helping me, and vice versa! ;)
But we can save that for PMs. ;)

    Hello, I'm Michele

I'm in the Houston, TX area until the end of January, then heading for Ft. Lauderdale for a few months, then back to Texas, but more northly, then to Oklahoma for the summer, then Pennsylvania for part of August, then possibly either Michigan or Minnesota for September, then back to Texas for October, November, then probably the whole winter down here, too.

I haven't hit the road for longer than a few months at a time until now. It's been calling for a while, but I'm just now in a place in my life where I can answer yes.

Problem is, I've been a householder for so long that I'm burdened by my posessions. I think I'll settle again someday and don't really want to start all over from scratch at that time, but I find it ridiculous to be paying rent to a storage facility.
I'll get over my attachment to my stuff eventually, won't I?

In the meantime I'm open to rideshare if anybody needs to go the same places I'm going at the same times.

    Peace.

      hey Michele!

From what part of H-town do you hail? I've lived on almost every corner of that city at some point! just pulled up last year to Austin and I'm loving the change of atmosphere out here!

->I'll get over my attachment to my stuff eventually, won't I?

oh yeah... thats the easy part... it's settling back down afterwords that the hard part really. not because you've given it all way but because you've gained so much on the road that you don't want to give up!

me and my pal T-Doe went for a good 4 month road trip across 9 states on next to nothing. stayed at free camp grounds and snook in to the pay sites to use their showers... best damn thing I ever did!!

Fairfax, Virginia....I have never traveled or camped (though I will probably at least change the camping part in the next couple of months) but also have dreamed of the open road. It's an experience I'd like to have before I "settle"...

    Hey all!

new to this tribe but, not too new to the whole nomadic lifestyle. I travelled for most of my 20's and now starting off again in my early 30's with my amazing 2.5 year old. Just procured a VW Bus and heading out in a few weeks. Not sure yet what is going on but we'll see where we are called.

    Update

Fla was a blast, but then found out I wasn't heading back to TX after all, got sent to NC then GA by my boss.
then left hangin' a bit by said boss, to end up coming back to OK for a second summer at my "new" scout camp.
Thought I'd get to visit home at least during spring this year, have been a bit "homesick" a few times.
Not that I have a home anymore, as there's no place to live if I go back to TX, but missin' my familiar weather patterns, at least.

    next stop PA, then OH.

    then, who knows?

Good stuff, I like what I ‘m seeing. I’m in Southern Ontario Canada and looking for any excuse to travel the world and expand my horizons. The only trouble is I keep talking myself into staying because I ‘ haven’t saved enough money’.

Just go, man. Money will appear when you need it. When you're broke and feel like you're stranded, someone's gonna offer you a job. If you got the karma, just go man. :)

You’re right. I just need to get that through my head. It’s not like my job here is going to help me save any money anyway. I just need to go and let the universe take care of me. I’ve, as you put it, got the karma, I just need a jump start.

The only jump start you need is a good backpack, the right set of gear, and the willingness to step foot out the door. ;)

            Oh, and good weather... ROFLMAO!

i have always wanted to travel on horseback with all of my dogs for an extended period of time. i don't think i could make it a permanent thing though. i need a home base to call home.
  • Re: Roll Call

    Fri, December 15, 2006 - 11:45 PM
hmmm... there's not an actual answer to that for me. i'm a truckdriver, so 'at' changes every single minute... my 'home base' is pretty flexible too. right now it's a cabin in the sierra nevada foothills in northern califormia. no amenities except a woodstove and we love it. but we're actually working on buying a house in austin texas. THAT:S a trip! 'settling down' - even just a bit of it - is much harder than wandering for me. but we hope to fill our house with community, and we'll still be trucking and travelling!
    • Re: Roll Call

      Sat, December 16, 2006 - 10:06 AM
austin's a great city to settle down in... but just because you buy a house and/or have a 'home' in the traditional sense does not mean you have to give up being a nomad.

good luck to everyone in their travels through this life!
--looks like we're almost up to 100 members... YaY nomads!

        Sun, December 17, 2006 - 1:05 AM
yeah, i struggle wiht this a whole lot. i don't WANT to stop being a nomad - but I DO want community. Ya know? I love it that the whole friggin' us of a feels like home to me now. I've travelled so much that that's really true. it's a great feeling. But I can feel the need for a home base too. it's hard to figure out how to do both mostly because so few people do i guess. it's good to have this tribe and get to talk to and hear like-minded people...
